Pate de Verre

Full Fathoms Four, Pate de Verre

This fascinating work has a very natural appearance; with suggestions of newly hewn minerals, ice crystals, cloud formations and ocean depths. The viewer is given the space to explore their own interpretation & a very personal interaction occurs. Unique & intriguing, this work has to be seen.

(The name Pate de Verre is French for glass paste. The technique involves filling a mould with a paste made of small particles of glass. Both the glass paste & the mould are then fired in a kiln, fusing the glass into a single piece. The glass is cooled very slowly & then removed by separating, lifting or destroying the mould. The piece is cleaned & finally can be finished by polishing, engraving or decorating.)

Originally created as a response to seeing deep banks of storm clouds from an aeroplane window, this design has developed into a unique work that never ceases to enthral.

Ceramics

These striking pieces are created using a variety of hand building & casting techniques in smooth, tactile white-bodied clays. The sparing use of colour, allows form & texture to be paramount. Exploring curves & stratified layers, the materials are allowed to inform design, but the inspiration comes from the natural world. These are beautiful evocative forms that are tactile & appealing.
